Spring is Here!

In celebration of Spring, we will be building butterfly crafts for the residents on Torrey Pines. The butterflies are made from recycled plastic Easter eggs- a fantastic way to reuse previous holiday decorations. They have googly eyes and even a small patch of grass to sit on! 120 butterflies need to be put together, so we'll need all the help we can get.

Easter Weekend

This past Saturday EOE hosted an Easter arts and crafts session, BUT a little something special happened. One of our newest volunteer brought along his 6 month old son to meet the residents! He is the most adorable baby who could not coo or smile more. The residents instantly fell in love with the little fella.

Valentine Prepartions!

This Sunday we were able to work together with the beautiful ladies of Sigma Omicron Pi once again! For Valentine's Day this year, EOE plans to give each of the residents in downtown La Jolla a little something. Origami blow-up bunnies or flying pigs! With the help of at least 20 plus girls we were able to fold many many critters.

To update, with our second task at La Jolla Nursing Facility we will be curating an impromptu photo collection in the dining hall. Every couple of months, EOE likes to rotate artwork to spice up residency from time to time. The photo gallery consists of personal photos from EOE members ranging from European travels, family outings, food document, and good old San Diego. We'd like to share with the residents a little bit of who we are through photographs. Come check it out!

As a bonus, EOE head administrators were able to negotiate more funding from Volunteer Connnection. With the added budget an seasonal event can be planned for almost every month. Stay tuned for much more happenings.

Sunday Date with the Elderly

On Sundays, we often visit the seniors in the Care Unit of Classic Residence. We walk with them in the park, host the afternoon tea cart visit, and facilitate a beauty nail care session.

Because the activities are always changing at Classic Residence, volunteers have the flexibility of choosing events of interest. To participate in an activity, volunteers should let Jennifer Lee know about two weeks beforehand so that she can coordinate it.

Turkey Coasters - Nov. 22, 2008

We visited the La Jolla Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for a Thanksgiving related craft event. We put together these awesome turkey coasters with the seniors. After our craft project, they had their tea time and guess what?...they used them!

Functionally cool indeed.

^ Gobblin' up that coffee!

Winter Art Project - Nov. 23, 2008; Halloween Treats - October 25, 2008

We held a holiday-themed art and crafts project for the seniors in the Memory Support unit of Classic Residence.

Summary:
-we made a festive doorknob hanger
-templates were cut out beforehand during a work party
-the seniors practiced their visuospatial skills by arranging the various cutout shapes into the sample figure we provided
-the volunteers encouraged the seniors to keep up their good work and helped glue their projects

Snowmen S'mores - Fall Quarter 2008

We started this art project during the beginning of summer so that we had enough time to complete the ~120 individualized snowmen s'mores gifts by December. With the creativity of and help from the sisters of Sigma Omicron Pi at UCSD, we had snowmen that were decorated in every way possible. From a hula dancer to a reindeer, we had a truly amazing range of snowmen.

On Sunday December 14, 2008, we had the opportunity to pass out the gifts to the seniors at La Jolla Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Watching their faces light up made the work we put into the gifts worthwhile. It's amazing how the holiday spirit can warm up the soul.

^ Here's a picture showing the range of snowmen we have. I spy a mermaid, a Christmas tree, a penguin...

^ The sisters of Sigma Omicron Pi held a contest amongst themselves to see who could best take the basic snowman onto a whole new level. Here are the winners!
